Tobias Padilla Castillo died Thursday evening, June 2, 2022, at Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center in Show Low, Arizona of natural causes. He was 60 years old. "Toby", as he was known, was born on a Sunday, June 11, 1961 in McNary, Apache County, Arizona to his parents, Julian and Anastasia "Anne" (Padilla) Castillo.
Toby was a member of Blue Ridge High School's Class of 1979. In 1985, he received his B.A. in Business from Northern Arizona University (NAU). Just a few short years later, on December 17, 1987, Toby married the love of his life, Sarah Elizabeth Maya in Whiteriver, Arizona. They spent more than 34 years together as husband and wife; they were there for each other to celebrate in their accomplishments and shared in each other's pains and sorrows. They truly were one.
For many years, Toby worked for the Whiteriver Unified School District where he taught 8th grade math. He was well liked by his students and respected by his colleagues. He also served as the Athletic Director at both the junior high school and high school in Whiteriver. He was a true fan of the Falcons. He coached many of their athletes on the basketball court, the football field and the wrestling mat. Coach Castillo was the keystone in the sporting victories of his athletes. He loved to watch them succeed; both on and off the field.
Toby was an incredible family man. He had the love and respect of his son and the adoring devotion of his beautiful wife. Truly, that's all a man needs in life. However challenging Toby's life may have been, they made it a happy and fulfilled one. He instilled within his son, Toby, life skills and values that will serve him the rest of his life. He learned from his dad that you should always strive to be your best because, "as long as you do your best, that's what really counts." His son will do his "best" in honoring his father's memory. Toby's wife, Sarah said that, "As a true fighter, he taught me to fight and not be afraid to speak out for what you believe in. Fear never stopped him from doing anything." With his debilitating illness, Toby struggled daily to be brave and to do his best. His was the example that all can emulate. Through is challenges, Toby's sense of humor was never compromised. He was hilarious and was a great storyteller. As a son, he was a living testament of faith and inspiration to both his mother and father. To his his sisters, he was the brother that every girl needs.
