Thelma McKay

September 28, 1944 — January 10, 2025

Thelma June McKay (née Fuhrer) was born September 28, 1944, to John and Leona Fuhrer in Great Falls, Montana. She was the youngest of three children, growing up alongside her brothers, Eugene and Richard. At age 16, Thelma became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, thanks to her friend, Marie Erwin, who introduced her to the church. Following her graduation from high school, Thelma attended Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho where she studied elementary education.

After losing her mother at the time of her college graduation, she moved home to help her father and began her teaching career in Fort Benton, Montana. With her father's encouragement, she moved to Logan, Utah and continued her education at Utah State University. While at Utah State, Thelma met Norlis McKay, and they were married in the Logan Utah Temple on April 19, 1968. Two months later, they graduated with bachelor's degrees in elementary education. They moved to Roy, Utah where they taught school and welcomed their first two children. In 1972, the family relocated to Show Low, Arizona, after Norlis accepted a position as an elementary school principal. There deep roots were planted, and three more children joined their family. Thelma enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom and teaching children at church. She later resumed teaching and taught for an additional 20 years. She left a legacy of family dinners, education, serving others, family history, avid reading, and keeping one's word.

Thelma passed away peacefully at home on January 10, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Eugene, and her son Timothy.

She is survived by her husband, Norlis; children, Todd & Robbie Ann McKay, Trent & Erin McKay, Tiffani & Troy Forbush, Trever & Kate McKay; ten grandchildren; and her brother, Richard Fuhrer.
