Robert O Ober

Robert Ober of Overgaard, Arizona passed away August 18, 2018. He ws 94 years old.  He was born November 14, 1923, to the late Edd Arthur and Margaret (LeRoy) Ober in Blackhoof Township, Carlton County, Minnesota. He was a twin to his sister, Anne, and an older brother to Albert.

Bob was the typical farm boy and was always getting into some kind of mischief. Once, he took all the bolts out of his dad’s plow and, when his dad hooked on to it with a team of horses, the entire plow fell apart. Another tale told about Bob was when, as a little boy, he was on top of his mom’s ironing board when his sister crawled up on top where he was and, as you can imagine, the ironing board came down with a crash. When asked what happened, Bob responded "it was OK till Anne got up here!"

On a bright summer day, a young lady came over to borrow a catalog. We are certain the catalog was not the reason for the visit. This is when he met a beautiful young woman, Joyce Reed, who would be his companion and eternal sweetheart for the past 73 years. They wed the following summer, after he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and, then, he was off to The Philippines, where he served during WWII. When he returned home, his lovely spouse was severely affected with rheumatoid arthritis. Upon the advice of her doctor to move to a warmer climate, Dad sold the farm, loaded up the kids in the old car with a small trailer holding all their earthly possessions and, moved to Mesa, Arizona.

One bright Sunday morning, the kids went to a local church that was near their home.  Mom gave them some money to put in the collection plate. Upon their return home from church, the money was returned to their mother. This caused considerable questioning as to what kind of church was this that didn’t have a collection plate? As can be imagined, mighty miracles took place over the next few years as, one by one, Mom and the children were baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bob was the last hold out, stating that he was going to wait to be baptized until he had two sons, where one could baptize him and, the other could bestow upon him the Holy Ghost by confirming him. This event took place on March 25, 1967. From that moment on, Dad grasped the gospel of Jesus Christ and faithfully served in many callings.  He especially loved working with the youth in scouting program.  He was so thankful to receive all of the ordinances of the Gospel.

Dad always loved to play cards at the Senior Center. His favorite card games were double-deck pinochle and bridge. After two rounds, he could tell what the other players had in their hand. He frequently would ask "why didn’t you play that other card you have in your hand?" to the amazement of his other card buddies.

Bob is survived by his daughter-in-law, Marie Ober (Darrel's wife); 3 children:  Michael Ober; Barbara (Jerry) Betournay; Patrick Ober; 14 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren. Along with his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his eternal companion, Joyce Ober; his twin sister, Anne Stark; his brother, Albert Ober; two sons:  James Ober, Darrel Ober and by a grandson, Shawn Ober.

Special earthly angels took care of Dad the last few months of his life; Donna McManus, RN Case Manager and Darian McLean, Certified Nursing Assistant; and others all from Hospice Compassus and Palliative Care. Our local Senior Center has been so gracious in delivering his Meals-on-Wheels and, they always looked in on him to see how Dad was doing; offering him much encouragement and support.
