Larry Van Amos, 81, passed away peacefully at home on March 20, 2018. He was surrounded by his family, who loved him dearly. Larry was born on September 14, 1936, in Woodruff, Arizona, to the late Byde and Maude (Gibbons) Amos.
Larry spent his youth in Woodruff and Snowflake, then moved to McNary in his early teens. His mother, who was a school teacher, then moved the family to Phoenix, Arizona, for greater opportunities. After school, Larry joined the Navy, where he travelled around the world.
In 1959, Larry married his wife Marlene, and went on to raise five children. He worked hard, and worked many jobs to provide for his family. He joined the Phoenix Fire Department in 1960, and was a plumber by trade. He retired from the Department in 1980 and moved his family back to the White Mountains, settling in Show Low. He worked at SRP for many years, then went on to work at the Hondah Casino, where he was the Director of Surveillance. He was a member of the White Mountain Apache Tribe.
Larry loved to travel the backroads of the state with his family, camping, hunting and fishing. He loved to weld, take photographs, look at the stars through his telescopes, and plot his travels on his GPS.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and held many positions, one of his favorites being a Stake Missionary. He loved the gospel, and studied it diligently.
Larry is survived by his wife Marlene; sons Shawn, Colin (Carol), Evan (Erin); daughters Shannon and Heather; grandchildren LaRee (John), Coley, Quince (Jamie), Ellie (Chad), Eli, Ethan, Eyan and Evey; and great grandchildren Elyce, Kassie, Sadie and Gage.
