John Matthew Carey

May 4, 1968 — August 29, 2020

Our beloved John Matthew Carey, Born May 4, 1968, in Breckenridge, MN, left us suddenly and far too soon, on August 29th, 2020.

Loving husband, father, son and brother, John is survived by his wife Susan, daughter Grace, parents James and Patricia, and siblings Paul and Jesse, who all feel his loss deeply, every single day.

John was many things in his life. A remarkable doctor, an exceptional athlete, impassioned chef and foodie, gentle gardener, and maybe most of all, a wonderful friend who above all, cherished the time he spent with family, and the friends he called family.

It seems as though John was always destined to become a doctor, easily winning the 5th-grade science fair for his work on the human body, and a precursor to the keen interest in helping people with their general wellness as a young adult. John attended Anoka Senior High and the University of Minnesota. He went on to receive his Doctorate from Rush University in Chicago in 2000, spent his medical residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix, AZ, and enjoyed his career as a radiologist in Show Low, AZ. He was cherished by his colleagues and patients and took a deep interest in his work, having saved and improved countless lives.

John was an extraordinary athlete, winning the State Wrestling Championship at 13 and receiving a D1 college scholarship for soccer. Until his last days, he was a force on a mountain bike and his skis. He enjoyed playing golf, hunting, and watching football.

John lived life to the fullest with a carefree attitude and a charming, playful demeanor. Anyone who knew John would tell you when they think of him, they first see his face with that mischievous twinkle in his eye. Remember his endearing smile.  Hear his infectious laugh. He brightened the room when he walked in. To know John Carey was to love him…

“Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.  And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.  And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.”  Khalil Gibran
