Jeanne Joyce Larson Hatch was born 24 July 1922 in the mining town of Potrerillos, Chile to William Leo Joyce and Amelia Waterstreet. She lived her childhood in the northern desert of Chile where her father was a mining engineer. When she was a student at Stanford University World War II began and Jeanne joined the war effort as a secretary working for Military Intelligence in La Paz, Bolivia. She met Rolf Larson in Bolivia and they married in 1945. They spent their married life living in Brazil and Mexico and six children were born to their family. Jeanne was widowed in 1969 and she returned to Mexico City to work for the FBI. She then moved to Provo, Utah where she worked as the Executive Assistant of the MTC President. A faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Jeanne served in many different positions. She was a member of the Church’s Primary General Board. In 1978, she married Dr. Ernest LeRoy Hatch and the Hatch children and grandchildren added great joy to her life. Roy and Jeanne served two missions for the Church opening the first Spanish-speaking Mission Training Center in Mexico City, and serving as president and matron in the Guatemala City Temple. She was widowed in 1995. Subsequently she served in the Area Presidency office of the Church’s Chile Santiago Mission from 1997-1998. After her mission she returned to live in Mesa, Arizona. She was an avid knitter and was also dedicated to doing family research. She authored life histories entitled El Médico, Millie’s Story, and Kaleidoscopes. Preceded in death by her two husbands and two of her children, Corwin T. Larson and Signe Larson Larkin Nuñez she is survived by four daughters, Risa Larson Udall (Barry), Jana Larson Fowers Bybee (Howard), Liana Larson Clarkson (Steven), Marina Larson and 41 grandchildren and 132 great and great-great grandchildren. She is dearly loved and will be greatly missed. In light of the worldwide humanitarian crises the family asks that in lieu of flowers please donate to the LDS Church Humanitarian Fund or Save the Children (savethechildren.org).
There will be a viewing held on Friday, April 1, 2022 at 6:00 PM, with a funeral service to follow at 7:00 PM at Harris Ward Chapel on 1455 N. Harris Drive in Mesa, Arizona 85203. For those that cannot attend Friday, another Viewing will be Saturday, April 2 at 12:00 (noon) with a Memorial Service starting at 1:00 PM at Owens Livingston Mortuary- White Mountain Chapel. Interment will be at the Lakeside Cemetery at 2:30 PM.
