Marty Martin Bedford

d. May 24, 2018

Marty Bedford passed away on May 24, 2018, at his home in Lakeside, AZ.

Marty (also known as Toady to many) was predeceased by his parents Ellis and Frances and brother Ray. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy; daughter, Tara Bedford Chipman (husband David); son, Travis; stepdaughter, Candace Hatfield (husband Carey); grandchildren, Jared Hatfield and Sarah Westman (husband Rob); and his loving and faithful dogs, Louie and Angus.

An educator, a scholar, and a writer of sermons and speeches, Marty taught Geography and American History, earning his teaching degree at Harding College in Searcy, Arkansas. Coming to Tucson in the 1950s, he taught at Roskruge, Wakefield and Naylor middle schools, and later at Sahuaro High School. When he retired after 30+ years with the Tucson Unified School District, he began a second career as a preacher in the church of Christ. A devout man, Marty was baptized in Philadelphia as a teen and carried that faithfulness to the Mountain Avenue, Ina Road, and East View churches of Christ in Tucson, and eventually to the High Country Church of Christ in Show Low, AZ, serving as a preacher and a leader in the congregation.

Marty was a devoted husband and father, a dedicated friend and a true gentleman. He was kind, sensitive, and soft hearted. He was well read and funny. He loved crosswords, poker, Mexican Train, coffee, and a good cheeseburger.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at High Country Church of Christ at 2:00 pm. Afterwards, please join the family for a light reception in the church hall.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Marty’s name can be made to your favorite veteran’s organization or a Church of Christ in your area.
