Gwendolyn Virginia Butler Waters passed away peacefully at home in Salt Lake City and joined her eternal companion on Monday, January 14, 2019. Gwen was born April 14, 1922 to Josephine and Byron Butler in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Gwen graduated from West High School in Salt Lake City in 1939. She married her sweetheart, Donald Lee Waters, in the Salt Lake Temple on April 26, 1945. Soon after the end of World War II they moved to St. Johns, Arizona and there they lived for the next 60 years, loving each other and raising their family. They were faithful members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and supported each other in many different church callings. After they retired they served in the Mesa and Snowflake Temples for a total of 16 years. They enjoyed many wonderful friends in St. Johns as well as friendships made while working in the Temple. For the last two and a half years Gwen has resided in Salt Lake City where she enjoyed new friendships, her nieces and nephews, her children and grandchildren.
Gwen is preceded in death by her sweetheart, Lee Waters, a brother, Boyd F. Butler, a granddaughter, a grandson and a son-in-law. She is survived by her five children, Janice Brown, David L. Waters (Kathy), Marsha Wilson, Curtis D. Waters (Margie), Scott L. Waters (Natalie), 18 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, and 9 great-great grandchildren as well as her nieces and nephews.
There will be a Memorial Service in Salt Lake City, Utah at the Salt Lake Ensign Stake Center, 135 A Street, at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 21, 2019. A funeral will be held at 11:00 A.M. in St. Johns, Arizona at the downtown Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Saturday, January 26th. A viewing will be held from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m.
