Colleen Schmitt McCray

April 28, 1927 — May 8, 2019

Colleen (Schmitt) McCray passed away May 8th, 2019 from natural causes, at the age of 92 in Snowflake, Arizona. Colleen McCray was born in St Johns Arizona, April 28th, 1927. She lived there with her parents Dexter Lee McCray and Euphemia Berry, and her 15 brothers and sisters.

She graduated from St Johns High School, then moved to Tucson, AZ. She worked as a telephone operator until she married Richard Paul Schmitt on September 5, 1948. They had 3 children Catherine Louise, Richard Paul Schmitt Jr, and Karma Jean. They moved to Phoenix and had one more child Anthony Bryan. They lived in Phoenix and Mesa for 30 years.

She was a daughter of the American Revolution.  Colleen was a homemaker, wife, and mother. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and helped in many positions in the church. She was the PTA president for many years in the Creighton Elementary School District. Music was very important in her life and she sang beautifully. She participated in many choirs including the Relief Society Mother's Choir in Salt Lake at general conference. Our home was always open to guests, family members, and friends who were in need of a place to stay. She loved to sew. She took a LaSalle interior design class. Colleen was passionate about history and family history and she was a professional genealogist for years. She served a mission in Alabama for 18 months and loved sharing her testimony of Jesus Christ.

Colleen lived with her children, Karma in AZ, Cathy in Oklahoma, and Richard in Tempe, AZ. Colleen spent her last several years in her home and the Carriage House in Snowflake where she passed away.

Her survivors are 2 brothers, Terry & Phillip McCray and two sisters Correnne Magee, and Kathy Reidhead, and her children, Catherine Louise Snow, Karma Jean Alton, and Anthony Bryan Schmitt. She has 15 grandchildren and 54 great grandchildren.

The funeral services will be held on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. at the Temple View Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2885 W. Highway 277, Snowflake, Arizona with a viewing one hour prior to the services.

Interment will follow in the R.V. “Mike” Ramsay Memorial Cemetery in Snowflake.

Thanks to all who have helped Colleen McCray through many years of her life. Especially, the last few years of service given while she has been unable to care for herself. We, her family, are most grateful.
