Suelene Andrews

June 7, 1922 — December 5, 2017

Funeral services for Suelene Andrews, 95, will be held at the Holbrook United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday December 12th.  A viewing may be attended at 10:00 a.m., one hour prior to the church service. A graveside service will be held at the Holbrook Cemetery immediately following the church service. Suelene passed away peacefully on the morning of December 5th in Lakeside, Arizona. Suelene Lazenby was born June 7, 1922 in Bluffton, Arkansas to her parents Calvin Reed Lazenby and Mary Roberts McCall (Lazenby).  In 1923, they moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico to be with other family members and due to the economic situation at the time. She grew up in Carlsbad and attended school there with her other three sisters until her high school graduation.  Here she met the love of her life, Leroy “Pete” Andrews.  They became husband and wife on May 25, 1945 at Christ Church in New York City, New York, while Pete was serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Afterwards, they continued to live in Carlsbad and in the meantime, had two sons and one daughter. In 1963, they loaded up the three ornery kids and moved to Holbrook to own and operate the Chief Motel. She later started working at the First Navajo National Bank which later became Great Western Bank. She eventually became the Operations Officer of the bank while Pete ran the motel. In 1970, they sold the motel but remained in Holbrook. Pete became Holbrook’s first Planning and Zoning Inspector until he retired in 1981. Suelene enjoyed family and friends, cooking (best known for her famous Pecan Chocolate Cake), volunteering for every Church function possible (hence the name her children affectionately dubbed her and her sister Ruth as “The Church Ladies”), volunteering for the Food Bank Drives, helping run the polls during election times, and helping raise her grand-children. She was once named Holbrook’s Woman of the Year. She was very loved by many and will surely be missed. Suelene was preceded in death by her husband Leroy (“Pete”); two sisters, Callie Lazenby (Welch), Ruby Lazenby (Jones); and her eldest son, Randy. Survivors include her sister Ruth Lazenby, her daughter Linda (David Craft), her son David, four grand-children; Brandon, Brett (Jen), Lynn Lewis (Danny), and Davin; 5 great-grand-children, numerous nieces and nephews, and 2 great-great-grand-children. Any donations can be made to the Holbrook United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 276, Holbrook, Arizona 86025
