Tom Rex Coochyumptewa, of Winslow, Navajo County, Arizona passed away, surrounded by his family, on July 21, 2015 at the Haven of Lakeside in Lakeside, Navajo County, Arizona. He was 71. Tom was born to his parents the late, Lynn and Isabell (Tawawenka) Coochyumptewa in Second Mesa, Navajo County, Arizona on March 15, 1944. He served in the United States Navy before being medically discharged. A very giving person, Tom was always helping his family and friends. He walked everywhere he went and was always carrying and reading his favorite book, The Book of Mormon. He loved to dance and was a Gourd Dancer for many years. He loved children and enjoying spending time with his nieces and nephews. Tom also loved to fish. He spent most of his time in Winslow. He is survived by his brothers, Paul (Elouise) Coochyumptewa of Polacca, Arizona and John (Cree) Coochyumptewa of Second Mesa, Arizona; sisters, Mollie Uqualla of Second Mesa and Virgie (Chuck) Tortice of Whiteriver, Arizona as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Linda Quavehma and Edith Mae Coochyumptewa and a brother, Joseph Coochyumptewa. The family would like to thank the staff of Haven of Lakeside, Hospice Compassus and Owens Livingston Mortuary for the kind care of their brother and uncle. They would also like to thank, Brother Earl Owens, Brother Josh Baldon, Will and Eagle Numkena, Elson Lupe, Lynn Jackson, Jan Manuel, Lana Tortice, Sheri Reed and all others who came and sat with their family and comforted them in their time of sorrow. Private services will be held.
