Mavis Kathryn Holmes

Mavis Kathryn Holmes died Saturday night, July 4, 2015, at Holbrook Extended Care in Holbrook, Arizona. She was 88 years old. Mavis was born on June 1, 1927, in Harvey, Wells County, North Dakota to her parents, the late Alvin Fredrick and Agnes Dagny (Christianson) Schnabel. Mavis graduated in 1948, after 3 years of nurses training, as a Registered Nurse from Trinity Hospital School of Nursing in Minot, North Dakota. After working in hospitals for many years, in Minneapolis, Denver, Chicago and Minot she married Ray Holmes. His job brought them to Holbrook and she became a school nurse for the Holbrook School District. She worked mainly at Hulet Elementary but was occasionally the only nurse that the district had for all four schools combined. Hundreds of students went through her office through the years. Whether they had a fever, cut or bruise, they were not only treated but, left the office with a big dose of TLC (Tender Loving Care). Mavis retired in 1986, after 18 years. She was a longtime member of The United Methodist Church in Holbrook. Mavis was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Ray H. Holmes. She is survived by her three daughters: RaeNell Holmes, Marcia Myers and Julie Cole; one son, Brent Holmes (Theresa) and by her grandchildren. A memorial service will begin 10:00 A.M., Saturday, July 18, 2015 at the United Methodist Church, 118 W. Arizona Street in Holbrook, Arizona. A private family committal service will be held at the R.V. "Mike" Ramsay Memorial Cemetery in Snowflake, Arizona where she will be laid to rest with her husband, Ray. Memorial contributions, in her name, to Holbrook Extended Care: 216 Joy Nevins, Holbrook, Arizona 86025 have been suggested by her family.
