Hazel Eva Anderson died early, Mother's Day morning, Sunday, May 10, 2015 at the Leisure Living Cottages in Mesa, Arizona from causes incident to her age. She was 98 years old. Hazel was born on a Friday, November 24, 1916, in Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri to her parents, the late William and Edna Nora (Hill) Fohn. Hazel married her forever sweetheart, Roy Alton Anderson, in August of 1939 in Vancouver, Washington. After nearly 65 years of marriage, Roy died on July 25, 2004. During WWII, Hazel worked as a receptionist for a small doctor's office in Vancouver. In 1954, the Anderson family moved to Ketchikan, Alaska where Roy worked at the local pulp mill. While living in Ketchikan, Hazel volunteered her time, talents and self to the hospital there. Also, while living there, she was elected to be the first president of the hospital auxiliary. In 1961, Hazel and Roy moved to Snowflake, Arizona with their children. She lived her life in the service of others and taught, by example, her children to give of themselves in the service and care of others in need. She volunteered countless hours of community service to local retirement homes and churches. As a young girl, Hazel learned to play the organ and was able to play throughout most of her life for her own entertainment. Hazel knew how to have a good time. One of her favorite pastimes was playing bridge. She was an avid bridge player for 50+ years! She also knew her way around a golf course and loved playing a good round of golf. She was a woman who had a strong sense of community and was friendly to people wherever she went. Hers was a familiar face at the Silver Creek Senior Center, where she always greeted others with a warm and gentle smile. Hazel lived an incredible life and her kindness will be missed by many. She is survived by her son: Scott (Vida) Anderson of Mesa, Arizona; 8 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Along with her parents and husband, Hazel was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann Anderson in 2014, as well as 2 sisters: Flossie Caples and Ruby Carrigan. A special graveside inurnment service will take place 11:00 A.M., Saturday, May 23, 2015 at the R.V. "Mike" Ramsay Memorial Cemetery in Snowflake, Arizona where Pastor Bob Seymour will officiate. Memorial contributions, in her name, to: The Silver Creek Senior Center, P.O. Box 1495, Snowflake, Arizona 85937 have been suggested by her family.
