Martin Filiponis passed away after a lengthy illness at his home in Show Low, Arizona on February 8, 2015. Mr. Filiponis was born on May 24, 1952 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, the son of Albert and Eileen (Scanlon) Filiponis. He grew up in nearby West Fitchburg and attended Sacred Heart School from 1958 to 1966. Martin graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1970 where he excelled in academics, cross country running, indoor and outdoor track. Mr. Filiponis earned his degree in Science Management from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1975. Following travel to Europe and Latin America, Martin moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1978 where he taught mathematics at the Treehaven School and the Green Fields Country Day School. He was employed by the US Forest Service in Arizona in 1988. He served on the Black Mesa (Heber) and Lakeside Ranger District where he specialized in Recreation Management and as a Fire Prevention Officer. He retired from the US Forest Service in 2014. He is survived by an uncle, Shaun Scanlon of Nashua, New Hampshire, several cousins, good friends Daniel Fodness and Charmayne Windau of Show Low, Arizona and Daniel Bodeau of Magdalena, New Mexico. Interment will be private at the family plot, St. Bernard's Cemetery, Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Arrangements were handled thru Owens Livingston Mortuary-White Mountain Chapel of Show Low, Arizona.
