James Gerald Hornbake

March 21, 1932 — April 5, 2014

James Gerald Hornbake, 82, passed away April 5, 2014 at Hinkson's Assisted Living in St. Johns, Arizona. Jim was born March 21, 1932 in Clairiton, Pennsylvania. Shortly afterwards, he and his parents, Carl and Victoria Hornbake, moved to Glendale, Arizona. Jim graduated from Glendale High School, attended one year at Phoenix College, then attended the Phoenix Police Academy. Mary Sterling and Jim married in 1955, divorcing in 1975. On August 24, 1976, Jim married the love of his life, Deanna Dee. They shared their lives for 37 years, until Dee's passing on May 6, 2013. Jim was a Phoenix Police officer for 10 years. His father, Carl, co-owned A&H Supply Company with Carl Anderson. Upon their retirement in the early 1960's, Jim became sole owner of the roofing supply company, A&H Supply. In 1990, Jim sold the company. He and Dee then moved to their ranch, north of Concho, Arizona. Having no children of his own, Jim was a devoted, beloved step-father to Leslie and Jeff. He was a special, beloved "father" to his nephew, Travis, and niece, Kim. Jim was an avid golfer! He played golf everyday! Dee and Jim belonged to Moon Valley Country Club and, later, to Arizona Country Club. He had so many holes-in-one, that he lost count! When he moved to the ranch, he joined Concho Country Club, where he and Dee enjoyed many happy rounds of golf! Jim had a great love of all animals, and was always very sad when he lost one. They had a very special place in his heart. Those left to treasure his memory are his step-children: Leslie & Jim Matthews (their children, Michael & Justin), Jeff & Cindy Myers (their children, Briana, Brittney, Kayla & Kyle); his mother-in-law, June Perdue; his sister-in-law, Leanna Constance; his nephew, Travis & Shannon Constance (their children, Dalton, Moya & Ellie) and his niece, Kim & Pauly Axtell (their children, Kasper & Keegan). Jim will be missed by all of us who loved him. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Deanna Dee; his mother and father, Victoria & Carl Hornbake; and his father-in-law, Lambert Ward. No service is planned at this time. Jim always wanted his family and friends to celebrate his life in their own private way. Jim wished, upon his death, that donations be made to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado (wildanimalsanctuary.org) or to Best Friends Animal Society (bestfriends.org) or to the White Mountain Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1975, Lakeside, Arizona 85929. Arrangements were cared for by Owens Livingston Mortuary - White Mountain Chapel of Show Low, Arizona.
