Anselm "Sonny" Begay Jr., of Seven Mile, Navajo County, Arizona passed away on March 17, 2014 in Mesa, Maricopa County, Arizona, just one day prior to his mother's passing. He was 57. Sonny was born to his parents, Anselm Sr. and Marcelina (Cody) Begay in McNary, Navajo County, Arizona on July 19, 1956. Sonny loved to play basketball. He was an All American All Star and played throughout his high school and college days. He attended college at NAU, CEU and Ganado. An avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt and fish and especially loved hiking in the mountains he called home. Sonny was blessed with the gift of art. He enjoyed making arts and crafts and sharing his creations with family and friends. A true family man, Sonny loved spending time with them and truly enjoyed the peace he felt while with them. He is survived by his children, Sherilynn Noble, Sunshine Begay and Sonny Begay; 4 grandchildren; mother, Marcelina Begay; siblings, LaPriel Begay, Lena Marsha Rodriguez, Rosy Ann Parra and Andy Arnold Begay as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Anselm Begay Sr. A combined one night wake, for Sonny and his mom, Marcelina, was held 1:00PM Sunday March 23, 2014 at the home they shared together in Seven Mile. Funeral services for both Sonny and Marcelina, will be held 11:00AM Monday, March 24, 2014 at the Downtown Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 300 N. 11th St., Show Low with additional visitation one hour prior to services. The Begay family is thankful for all of the expressions of sympathy they have received during this difficult season and are especially grateful for all of the prayers that have been offered up on their behalf.
