Bertrand Gregory Grode died late Saturday night, October 26, 2013 at Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center in Show Low, Arizona at the age of 87. He was born on December 20, 1925 in Webster, Day County, South Dakota to his parents, the late Henry Peter and Mathilda Martha (Krause) Grode. Bertrand was part of the "Greatest Generation" this country has ever known. On October 23, 1944 at the age of 18, he enlisted himself in the United States Navy. He served his country bravely and faithfully and was able to receive his honorable discharge several months after WWII ended on July 20, 1946. After the war, Bertrand married his forever sweetheart, Gladys N. Tyra. Sadly, she died in 1978. Always knowing the importance of receiving a good education, Bertrand finally received his GED in 1970 at the age 45. He worked hard as a printer for many, many years and was able to retire in 1987. For the past 7 years, Bertrand has lived in the White Mountains making his home in Lakeside. Bertrand is survived by his sister, Rita Ann Verholtz of Lakeside, Arizona. She will miss him dearly but, finds a great deal of comfort knowing that he is once again united with his sweet Gladys.
