Etta Myers Davis

January 15, 1926 — September 16, 2013

Etta Myers Davis (Newman) was born on January 15, 1926 on a fruit and honey farm in Dickersonville, Niagara County, New York. She was the fourth generation to live in the farmhouse and married Robert Davis from Clay County, West Virginia on August 15, 1942 in the parlor immediately below the bedroom in which she had been born. Their partnership in business and family life lasted nearly 60 years until Robert passed away on June 6, 2001. Etta began driving big trucks on the farm at the age of eight and continued to love travel on the open road all over America. She also kept the books and did the hard physical labor of processing and selling honey for Myers & Davis, the family business. A lifelong photographer, writer and lover of history, she leaves behind a legacy of letters, anecdotes, essays and pictures that capture rural life in western New York as well as central Florida. On March 20, 2005 she married Charles "Chuck" Newman. Their love story written by Jo Baeza, was featured on the front page of the White Mountain Independent on February 11, 2005. Chuck and Etta met at church and found much in common. Each had become the caregiver for their spouse and were widowed after over 50 years of marriage. They had grown up during the depression and lived through World War II. They found new love in their golden years and enjoyed attending church and Bible study together, parties with friends and family, music, poetry, winters in Tucson and summers in Linden. Etta Myers Davis (Newman) entered into rest surrounded by family and friends at Solterra of the White Mountains, Lakeside, Arizona, on September 16, 2013. She was preceded in death by her parents Howard Myers and Bertha Adams, her husband Robert Davis, her granddaughter Tiffany Romney Girard, her brothers John and Melvin Myers and her second husband Charles "Chuck" Newman. She is survived by her sister Jennie Treichler of Sanborn, New York, her children Nancy (Clay Stidham) of Lakeside, Lynn (Hank Deutsch) of New Braunfels, Texas and Robert Jr. (Kimberly Minshew) of Lake Butler, Florida; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a great number of nieces and nephews; stepsons Art (Lona) Newman of Linden and Tucson, Arizona; Tim (Barbara) Newman of Linden and Gold Canyon, Arizona. Etta was a member of the United Methodist Church, Sebring, Florida after she became a born again Christian in 1952. She was a lifelong Methodist and a member of various congregations including Dickersonville, New York, Christ Church in Tucson and White Mountain UMC in Show Low, Arizona. She will be remembered for her hugs, her smiles and her prayers. She was a member of the Gideons Auxiliary. Memorial gifts can be directed to the Gideons International Ministry in her name. Arrangements are being provided by Owens Livingston Mortuary White Mountain Chapel in Show Low, Arizona. Viewing will be at 9 am on Saturday, September 21st and services begin at 10 am in the Mortuary Chapel, 320 N. 9th St. Following a graveside service in Lakeside, a reception will be held at White Mountain United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Show Low.
