Calvin Benjamin Newman died Friday afternoon, June 28, 2013 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona following a short illness. He was 82 years old. Cal, as he was known, was born on September 9, 1930 in Wink, Winkler County, Texas to his parents, the late Alfred Vanderhorn & Gloria (Barron) Newman. When Cal was about 2 years old, he moved to Arizona with his family. In June of 1951, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He was a Corporal at the time he received his honorable discharge in June of 1953. Cal was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War and served for many years as one of its Commanders and Chaplains. Cal appreciated his southwest roots and, as a young boy, began realizing his life as a cowboy. He enjoyed going on trail rides and listening to Country Western music. Many would be surprised to know that Cal has owned his horse, Macho, for 42 years! They had an incredible bond and had a trust of each other than is quite uncommon among other horse owners. Too, Cal enjoyed being in the great-out-of-doors, especially if it involved fishing and hunting. He loved living in the beauty of the White Mountains and appreciated the changing of the seasons throughout the year. In 1967, Cal moved to Lakeside, Arizona and went to work for Southwest Industries Snowflake Paper Mill. He worked one of its power house operators for many years and was able to retire in 1995. While working for the paper mill, Cal met his Eternal Companion, Erna Nelson. They were married in 1973. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Mesa Arizona Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Cal was a convert to the LDS Church and had a strong and fervent testimony of the Savior. He served in many church callings over the years and always did so with a willing spirit and gentle smile. He and Erna also served as temple workers for 2 -1/2 decades in the Mesa Arizona Temple as well as the Snowflake Temple of The Church. They both loved giving of their time as they served so faithfully in those holy places. Cal is survived by his children: Marie (Bart) Norton of Holbrook, Arizona, Shawn (Cindy) Raasveld of Burns Lake, British Columbia, Canada, Kevin (Dena) Newman of Maricopa, Arizona, Crystal Newman of Lakeside, Arizona, Jaime Garcia of Lakeside, Arizona; a brother, Richard Newman of Lakeside, Arizona and Riverside, California; a sister, Delores Balboa of Show Low, Arizona; 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Along with his parents, Cal was preceded in death by his wife, Erna in February of 2008 and by a son, Lenard Newman. The visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at Owens Livingston Mortuary - White Mountain Chapel, 320 N. 9th Street in Show Low, Arizona. The funeral service will begin 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at the Pinetop/Lakeside Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lakeside, Arizona. The concluding service with Military Honors will immediately follow at the Lakeside Cemetery, where Cal will be laid to rest along side of his beautiful bride of 40 years.
