Elizabeth Ellen "Betty" Petty

July 16, 1921 — January 7, 2013

Elizabeth Ellen "Betty" Petty died just after Noon on Monday, January 7, 2013 at Sierra Blanca Nursing Center in Lakeside, Navajo County, Arizona from causes incident to her age. She was 91 years old. Betty was born on July 16, 1921 in New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania to her parents, the late Clarence E. and Blanche B. (Maffatt) Monath. Betty married the first of her life's loves, Edwin Robert Moffett in 1940. In 1955, Betty and Edwin brought their family out west to Arizona from Kansas City, Missouri and called Tucson "home" for many years. Edwin was a true Christian, in every sense of the word, and daily tried to live his Christian values. In the words of his son, "He was a great man." Betty was known for her spunky attitude and vibrant life and, wanting to emulate her husband, she allowed "him to keep her in line." She, too, was a devout Christian and always tried to follow the Lord's admonition to "love one another." They had a wonderful marriage together and raised respectful and responsible children. In 1962, Betty's world was turned upside down when Edwin died following a lengthy illness. She missed him very much but, a few short years later, her life was turned right side up again. In 1965, Betty married the second of her life's loves, Martin Alfred Petty. The couple spent the next 40 years together as husband and wife. Together they struggled, and grew, from the ups and downs that life had to offer and always ended up better people for having the experience. Martin died in 2005 and Betty had to endure the heartache of that loss as well. Betty was an excellent seamstress and literally spent thousands of hours making beautiful and handsome clothes for her family and friends. Few people possessed the talent she had when it came to sewing and few ever will. It has been said of Betty that she truly "loved The Lord" and she spent countless days in the service of others. She volunteered with the Salvation Army for many years in Tucson and was an active member of its Home League. If ever there was anything that needed to be done, Elizabeth was there, giving of herself, making sure it got done! She loved to read her Bible and did so daily. That is where she learned that when in the service of others, she was only in the service of her God. She loved the people she met at the Salvation Army as well as those she worked with there. She was a longtime member of The Salvation Army Church and, since moving to the White Mountains in 2003, Betty was actively involved with The Salvation Army White Mountain Outpost. This incredibly dynamic woman will be missed by many but, none will miss her more than her own family. Betty is survived by 2 children: Bob (Susan) Moffett of Snowflake, Arizona, Ellen (Ron) Frame of Rigby, Idaho (and Tucson, Arizona); a sister, Ethel Hatfield of Kansas City, Missouri; 4 grandchildren: Danny Moffett of Snowflake, Arizona, Mitchell Moffett of Globe, Arizona, Stacey Stanislawski of White Mountain Lake, Arizona, Joleen (Dustin) Sheldon of Tucson, Arizona; 3 great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn Stanislawski, Joey Gonzalves and Tyler Benton. Along with her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by 4 siblings: Edward Monath, J.T. Monath, Frances Schell and Anna Merle Monath. The public visitation for Betty will be from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Adair Funeral Home - Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge Boulevard in Tucson, Arizona. The graveside service and interment will begin 11:00 A.M., Friday, January 11, 2013 at East Lawn Palms Cemetery, 5801 E. Grant Road in Tucson, Arizona where she will be laid to rest along side her husband, Martin Petty. Memorial Contributions, in her name, to The White Mountain Hospice Foundation, P.O.
