Alice Gatewood

November 10, 1930 — October 11, 2012

Alice Gatewood, affectionately known as "Allie", died Thursday, October 14, 2012 at Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center, Show Low, Navajo County, Arizona. She was 81 years old. Allie was born at home on November 10, 1930 in Canyon Day, Navajo County, Arizona to the late Hobart and Mabel (Josay) Griggs. Allie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend throughout her life. In her younger years, Allie thoroughly enjoyed going with her husband and children on their family hunting trips as well as fishing. She also looked forward, annually, to "making wood" for the family, as they all joined in and gathered wood for the coming year. Since her husband, Tenny Gatewood, died in 1992, she has missed that special time with her family. Allie was also very talented with her handicrafts; especially doing beadwork and sewing. She never used electric sewing machines but, rather enjoyed her old Singer with its foot pedal. Allie also had a great appreciation for her t.v. and loved watching "Little House on The Prairie" on it over and over again. She enjoyed watching western movies and, since she was not always able to attend church, she would faithfully watch many television evangelists. Allie was also very intrigued with, and knew much about, "Our Lady of Fatima" in Portugal from the t.v. documentary she watched regularly. Allie appreciated the beauty of the White Mountains and, whether she was the driver or the passenger, loved a good car ride. Throughout her long life, Allie would find a lot of peace and comfort going on long walks. She loved taking walks and recently, since her health did not permit her the freedom to walk, she truly missed those walks. Alice is survived by her 4 children: Linda (Fred, Sr.) Thomas of Hondah, Arizona, Tammy (Jacob, Sr.) of Hondah, Arizona, Tim (Doreen) Gatewood of Lakeside, Arizona, Trudy (Luke) Fall of Whiteriver, Arizona; her 2 nieces that she raised as her own: Gwen (Jerry, Sr.) Gloshay of Whiteriver, Arizona, Rufina Dazen of Whiteriver, Arizona; her 3 grandchildren that she raised as her own: Tera Gatewood of Hondah, Arizona, Terry Gatewood of McNary, Arizona, Jordan Gatewood of Hondah, Arizona; 20 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Along with her parents and husband, Allie was preceded in death by 2 sons: Tenny Gatewood, Jr., Terrell Gatewood and by a grandson, Terrance Gordon. A two-day wake will begin 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at the family home, 414 S. Indian Pine Road, #5 in Hondah, Arizona. The funeral service will be 10:00 A.M., Friday, October 19, 2012 at the Canyon Day Miracle Church where Pastor Leroy Tate will officiate. The concluding service and interment will follow at the Whiteriver Cemetery in Whiteriver, Arizona.
