Dan L. Nelmes passed away on August 31, 2012 at Sierra Blanca in Lakeside, Navajo County, Arizona. Dan was born in Rochester, Monroe County, New York to the late Douglas and Dorothy Nelmes on December 9, 1947. Dan moved to Mesa, Arizona in December 1979 where he worked as a Quality Engineer, and then moved to the White Mountains in 1990. Dan owned and operated "Dan's Happy Daze Café" in Wagon Wheel before becoming a landscape designer in 2001. In 2007, Dan was awarded a certificate from the state of New York honoring him for his design of a memorial for a fallen classmate who served in Vietnam. He was an avid animal lover and always supported the Humane Society of the White Mountains. Dan is survived by his daughter, Brenda (Richard) Wiles; son, Patrick Nelmes; brother, Gary (DiAnne) Nelmes; 2 granddaughters, 2 great-granddaughters; a niece and nephew and his beloved "children with paws." No services are planned at this time and Dan requests that all who knew him please make a donation to the Humane Society of The White Mountains, P.O. Box 909, Lakeside, Arizona 85929 in Dan's name.
