Floyd H. Doolittle died on Thursday, August 9, 2012 in Show Low, Arizona. He was 88 years old and died of heart trouble while practicing golf. He love being active and enjoyed downhill snow skiing, dancing, cycling, fishing, camping, woodworking and tending to his garden. But, most of all he loved his family. Floyd was born on October 19, 1923 in Webster City, Iowa. As a young man he graduated from Patton Trade School in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, served in the Navy aboard the Battleship U.S.S. Washington in the South Pacific, and later graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering. Upon graduation he worked at Bendix in South Bend, Indiana as a metallurgical engineer in the Aeronautical division until he retired in 1988. Floyd regularly volunteered at the St. Joseph County Red Cross, assisting a the Notre Dame football games and was a member of the St. Joseph Valley ski patrol working a Bendix Woods and Swiss Valley ski areas. Floyd was a man of faith, and as an adult he enjoyed a lifelong membership with the Presbyterian Church. His zest for living, positive outlook, quiet strength and friendliness with greatly missed by all. He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Doolittle; his two grandchildren, Katelyn and Matthew Stokes and his son-in-law, Gregory Stokes of Roswell Georgia; sister, Betty Vandeveer of Redding, California; and his closest friend and companion Linda Thomas. He is preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, June Doolittle, who died in 1996. Burial will be held Thursday, August 16, 2012 at the Highland Park Cemetery in South Bend, Indiana.
