Katie Mae Woods Hargrow

May 11, 1929 — March 31, 2012

Katie Mae Woods Hargrow died in the very early morning hours of Saturday, March 31, 2012 at her home in Holbrook, Navajo County, Arizona from causes incident to her age. She was 82 years old. Katie was born on May 11, 1929 in Morton, Scott County, Mississippi to the late James and Ossie (Johnson) Davis. Later, her father legally changed his surname to Norris. Katie was raised in Morton where she met and married SA Myers who preceded her in death. Later, she moved to McNary, Arizona where she lived just a short period of time before finally moving to Holbrook, Arizona where she lived for the rest of her life. Shortly after moving to Holbrook, Katie met and married James E. Woods, who also preceded her in death. In 2002, she was able to marry Melvin Hargrow, who just so happened to be her childhood sweetheart way back in Morton, Mississippi! Katie worked at several places doing various jobs in her early days of Holbrook until she found a job that she actually loved to do. Katie was a natural caregiver and believed that her calling in life was to help others with their healthcare needs. She worked as a certified nursing assistant, for several years, at the old Holbrook Hospital until they closed their doors. After the hospital closed, Katie did in-home health service for several people in the neighborhoods throughout Holbrook. Her final job, outside of her home, found her working at Holbrook's Senior Center, where her focus was still helping others in need. She was a people person and loved to serve them any way she possibly could. She remained at the Senior Center until her health no longer permitted her to work. Katie had a heart of gold that was refined through her Christ-like service to others. She was a very strong, loving, independent and caring woman who always enjoyed "going to church" to hear the "Good Word" and sing praises to The Lord. She was the Mother of Saint John's Missionary Baptist Church in Holbrook where she was loved and respected by all. She truly believed in helping anyone she met. She understood the scipture in the Book of Hebrews found in the New Testament: "Be not forgetfull to entertain strangers, for thereby some have entertained Angels unawares." Katie was understanding and she was full of wisdom. She would always give good, sound advice to those whom were willing to listen. This sweet and gentle lady will be missed by many people because she made many life-long friends wherever she went. In addition to her parents and first 2 husbands, Katie was preceded in death by a daughter, 2 sons and a grandson. She leaves to cherish her beloved memory: her husband, Melvin Hargrow; 2 sons, 2 daughters, 2 sisters, 1 brother, 17 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, many great-great-grandchildren as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Due to the number of those that will be attending her services, the public visitation for Katie will begin 10:00 A.M., Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Holbrook Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1127 Helen Avenue in Holbrook, Arizona and the funeral service will immediately begin at 11:00 A.M. at the same location. The concluding service and interment will follow at the Holbrook Cemetery in Holbrook, Arizona.
