Vera Doris Barnes

December 9, 1921 — November 19, 2011

Vera Doris Barnes died in the early morning hours of Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Tall Pines Nursing Center in Show Low, Navajo County, Arizona. She was 89 years old. Vera was born on December 9, 1921 in Glen Elder, Mitchell County, Kansas to the late Ivan George and Florence (Weir) Peterson. Throughout her long life, Vera worked as a butcher in the meat industry. She was an expert meat cutter and many looked forward to receiving the cut of beef from her counter. She was married to Wilton Wright Barnes and lived many years in Redding, California. Vera's world was turned upside down when her husband, Wilton died rather suddenly in 1967. Following his death she began a new chapter in her life. She continued her work as a butcher and following her retirement, Vera moved into a retirement community in Redding. She loved living there! She was an avid Poker player and was quite good at it, too. Everyday at 3:00 P.M. she looked forward to gathering with her poker buddies at the retirement club house. Those were long lasting friendships and when she moved to Arizona in 2000, she missed her poker games and friends a great deal. When she moved to Arizona 11 years ago, Vera found a new favorite pastime..the slot machines at the Hondah Casino. She enjoyed the thrill whenever she hit the jackpot! Vera, too, was a loving mother and loved to care for her family's needs the best way she knew how. She was an expert cook in the kitchen and many can attest to her prowess at the stove! Vera is survived by her daughter, Patricia "Pat" Bremer and her husband, Ron of Pinetop, Arizona; 2 grandchildren: Candi Brazil of Pinetop, Arizona and Laura (Philip) Pimentel of Hughson, California. Along with her parents and husband, Vera was preceded in death by a grandson, Barry Bremer in 2004. Private family services will be held at a later date and Vera's remains will be laid to rest alongside of her sweet husband, Wilton, at the Lawncrest Cemetery in Redding, California.
