Harry Hudson Newman

Harry Hudson Newman, 87, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at his beloved ranch near Heber. No services are scheduled. Harry was born on Feb. 16, 1924, in Phoenix. He enjoyed a very active childhood, spending summers on the Rim country with his older brother and sisters at the sheep camps. It was then back to Phoenix in the fall for school. Eventually Harry moved to Holbrook with his family. After graduating from Holbrook High School in 1942, Harry returned to Phoenix to pursue a degree in business from Lamson Business College. Harry then attended the University of Denver and was awarded a diploma in accounting. It was shortly after that that war intervened. Harry spent his World War II service in England, receiving an honorable discharge from service in 1946 after serving three years and achieving the rank of staff sergeant. After returning home from service, Harry, along with his brother Ezekiel B. Newman Jr., purchased the Conoco service station, motor court and oil agency, which they operated together successfully for 32 years. Harry also enjoyed breeding, raising and training Quarter horses, and had many winners throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, including such horses as Hi-Now and Hey-Pretty-Polly. In addition, Harry had a deep love and admiration for his collie dogs, raising, nurturing and training Star, Sydney, Big One and Little One, to name just a few. He also enjoyed membership in Masonic Chalcedony Lodge No. 6 in Holbrook. He leaves behind nieces, nephews, and multitudes of cousins and other relatives who love and miss him dearly. Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Julia Newman (Scorse) and Ezekiel B. Newman Sr.; three sisters, Gracie Newman, Verna Jane Newman (Abbott) and Hazel Newman (Redmon); and his brother, Ezekiel B. Newman Jr. Owens Livingston Mortuary of Holbrook handled the arrangements.
