Lillian Miner Coon

March 19, 1920 — March 21, 2011

Lillian "Lil" Miner Coon, 91, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Lakeside, surrounded by her loving family, March 21, 2011. She was born in Camaquey, Cuba on March 19, 1920 to Walter Miner and Katherine Leidig. Lil spent 6 years in Cuba and then moved with her parents to live in Vermont, where she spent her childhood and schooling years. She had her nurses training at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover, New Hampshire. After her graduation she went to Williamantic, Connecticut where she met and married the love of her life Edward Coon. In October 1944 they moved from Connecticut to McNary, Arizona and lived there for 4 years before moving to Show Low. She worked many years for Dr. Arnold H. Dysterheft and Dr. Jack Mowery at the McNary Hospital and McNary Clinic. Lil was the second woman to be elected to the Show Low School Board and served 2 terms in the 1950's. She also had the first Private Kindergarten classes in Show Low for 4 years in the 1950's. There was a great need for Pre-school at that time and her children benefited by the Kindergarten. After the death of her husband in 1998 she moved to Lakeside. They were married for 52 years before his passing. Lil has been a resident of the White Mountains for over 65 years and she believed that the White Mountains were the most beautiful place to live. She enjoyed many hobbies including painting, reading, being with her family and friends and watching the Diamond Backs Baseball games. She spent many hours at the Aquatic Center in Show Low. Lil attended the Immanuel Lutheran church in Lakeside for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Coon in 1998. She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Hether; sons, Eugene (Trudy) Coon, Peter Coon, and Lawrence (Ada) Coon; 7 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 2:00PM Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Owens Livingston Mortuary ~ White Mountain Chapel, 320 N. 9th Street in Show Low, Arizona. Memorial contributions to the White Mountain Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1975, Lakeside, Arizona 85929 have been suggested by her family.
