Bonnie Baldwin Shaw

February 6, 1925 — April 13, 2007

Bonnie A. Shaw, long time resident of the White Mountains, died peacefully in her sleep April 13th, 2007. Bonnie was the fifth of six daughters born to a coal miner in Ewing County, Virginia on February 6th, 1925. She grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia and eastern Kentucky and graduated from the Pine Mountain Settlement School. Bonnie obtained her degree in Political Science from Eastern Kentucky University, and in 1952, became one of the first women to receive a law degree from the University of Kentucky Law School, in Lexington, Kentucky. She came to Arizona in 1952 where she met the love her life, Walt Shaw. They were married on June 5th, 1955. Bonnie worked for the old McNary Bank. She worked as administrator for the McNary Hospital prior to its re-location to Show Low as the Navapache Regional Medical Center. She also served on the Blue Ridge School District Governing Board from 1972 through1978. She later became a real estate agent and continued selling real estate until her retirement. Bonnie and Walt spent countless hours hunting, fishing, skiing, camping and picnicking throughout the White Mountains. Spending time outside in the lovely White Mountains was one of her greatest joys. Bonnie is survived by her husband of 52 years, Walter Shaw; her children Gil, Margaret and Alison; sisters Joanna Housman of Show Low, Arizona and Evelyn Howard of Harlan, Kentucky; and three grandchildren, Matthew, Jennifer and Amber. A memorial picnic and fishing trip for friends and family is planned for Saturday June 23, 2007 at Hawley Lake to celebrate Bonnie's life.
