Sam Evelyn Lee

Sam "Sammie" Evelyn Lee passed away February 19, 2009 at her home in Holbrook. She was born March 16, 1918 in Princeton, Arkansas to the late Sam & Nancy (Cheatum) Turner and she was the oldest of 7 children. Sammie had a great love for the Hopi Tribe; doing a tremendous amount of genealogy for them, she was instrumental in helping preserve the Hopi Culture for the future generations to come. She was a school teacher who loved to make handmade quilts. Sammie worked at the Trading Post in Keams Canyon with many of her friends. During her time while serving her Country in the United States Navy she worked in the Fleet Post Office in Hawaii after the bombing of Pearl Harbor serving as the Port Mistress. She is survived by 1 son, Richard Henry Lee; 2 step-sons; Kenneth Ray Lee and Jack Randolph Lee; 4 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 7, 2009 at the American Legion Hall, 219 E. Iowa in Holbrook. The family has requested that donations be made in honor of Sam "Sammie" Evelyn Lee to the RTA Hospice & Palliative Care 1789 W. Commerce Dr., Lakeside, AZ 85929.
