Carolyn "Carol" Lucille Hartzell

January 16, 1937 — July 16, 2009

Carolyn (Carol) passed from this life on July 16, 2009 in Bannon Springs Group Home in Vernon, Arizona. She was born January 16, 1937 in Harrisville, New York to Kenneth and Marian (Miller) Carvell. Carol graduated from high school there, and received her B.S. in Education from SUNY at Buffalo, New York. She taught third grade for nine years in Berkeley, California and in the Denver, Colorado areas, before turning to law. A legal assistant for 21 years with various Denver law firms gave her pleasure and the opportunity to expand her horizons. Carol was married in 1958 and her great treasures were her children, though the marriage ended in divorce. Her fun times were spent singing, crafting, reading, bowling and enjoying the company of friends. She sang with the Empire Lyric Players, a Gilbert and Sullivan repertory group in Denver, where she met her husband and soul mate, Bill Hartzell, and during thirty-one years of marriage the two were also part of several ensemble groups plus the Northland Chorale. After retiring to Lakeside, Carol helped to establish a women's barbershop group called The White Mountain Belles. She was also active in Show Low's Library's book discussion group and the Lakeside Writer's Group. She is survived by her mother, Marian; her children, Jann Hardy of Aurora, Colorado, James Hardy of Burbank, California; grandson, Thomas Hardy also of Burbank, California; step-daughters, Linda Colburn (Robert) of Chandler, Arizona, Susan Kacsh (Glenn) of Queen Creek, Arizona; brothers, Ken Carvell (Joan), Gerald Carvell (Marlene); sister, Christina Rains. She is preceded in death by her husband Bill Hartzell in October 2008; her father, Kenneth Carvell in May 2006. No formal services are planned. Donations may be made in Carolyn's name to Hospice Compassus 1789 W. Commerce Drive Lakeside, Arizona 85929.
