E William Font

September 22, 1933 — November 14, 2009

E. William "Bill" Font slipped away to be with our Lord after a lengthy illness on November 14, 2009. He was 76 years old. His memorial service will be held 1:00 P.M., Saturday, November 21, 2009 at the Holbrook Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1127 Helen Avenue in Holbrook, Arizona. Bill was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 22, 1933, the only son of Elton and Stella (Ducorbier) Font. His early years were spent in New Orleans where he attended St. Leo, the Great Grade School and graduated from St. Aloysius High School, later renamed Brother Martin Academy. He attended Tulane University until he entered The United States Air Force in 1953. When he was stationed at Kirtland Field, Albuquerque, New Mexico, he met his wife, Betty nee Fawcett. They always laughed saying that they met at the Tijeras Drive-In Movie Theater and he was her "Pick-up". They were one in marriage for 54 years. He served most of his Air Force career at Kirtland Field in Albuquerque, but, in 1956, he transferred to the radar site in Winslow, Arizona. He was discharged at Luke Air Force Base and moved his family to New Orleans, where he worked for his father for three years. He returned to Holbrook in 1960 and worked at Heward Motor Company for several years. Bill had many talents. He was always creative and had the ability to make items for unusual applications. He was an automotive mechanic and after breaking his wrist, he decided to return to college to obtain a degree in teaching this trade. He taught at Williams High School for three years, then returned to Holbrook to teach at Northland Pioneer College. He was one of the original staff and taught for NPC for 14 years. He traveled Navajo County taking his "Big Mac" truck, teaching classes out of the truck. He was so proud of his "Powder Puff Class" and the mature women who learned so very much from him. Bill had been a member of St. George Episcopal Church since 1964 and was very active in the church as a lay reader, member of the Bishop's Committee, as well as working with Faith Alive and Cursillo. He continued this work throughout his life in Arizona and Washington. Bill and Betty moved to Port Angeles, Washington in 1988, where they owned and operated the Conestoga Quarters R.V. Park. He loved visiting with the campers and helping them with any problems they might have had. He, being the teacher that he was, started teaching at Peninsula College in Port Angeles where he taught for another 12 years. At his retirement, he and Betty decided to return home to Holbrook where he enjoyed his family, friends, and great-grandchildren. Here he had the time to work on his home, and do a little traveling. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Bill is survived by: his wife, Betty; son & daughter-in-law, Jeff and Debbie nee Turley Font; grandchildren: Desiree (Rudgar) Brewer and Travis Font; great-grandsons: Dillon and Chase Brewer; and numerous relatives in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elton and Stella Font. Memorial contributions to: The Holbrook Volunteer Fire Department, 100 W. Airport Road, Holbrook, AZ 86025 or to the Holbrook Humane Society c/o Animal Control, P.O. Box 970, Holbrook, AZ 86025.
