Walter Ray Downs

Walter Ray Downs, age 77, passed away August 5, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was born June 19, 1929 in Ballinger, Texas to Walter Redding and Mabel Downs. He moved to Arizona in 1963. He worked for the paper mill where he retired after 35 years. He also served in the United States Army, where he was a radio technician. Walter was a charter member of the Overgaard Fire Dept and the EMT for over 25 years. He helped start the American Legion in Overgaard and was a past commander, he was also instrumental in the development of the Overgaard Country Club and was a charter member. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was truly loved by all who knew him. Walter is survived by a brother, Marvin G. (Winona) Downs of Snowflake; a nephew, James McKinney of Seven Points, Texas, a sister-in-law, Faye (Gary) McKinney of Garland, Texas; and caregivers and nephew, Richard and Teresa Herbert of Las Vegas Nevada and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lavon Downs, his parents, Walter and Mabel Downs, step-dad, Thomas Hobbs and brother, James Downs. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thur. August 10th at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Heber. There will be a visitation from 7-8:00 P.M. Wed. August 9th at Owens Mortuary in Snowflake. Owens Mortuary of Snowflake handled arrangements.
